Erasmus project in Coláiste Pobail Acla
This summer sees the completion of the Erasmus project KA229 ‘Searching for Home’ in Colaiste Pobail Acla. This initiative explored emigration. The project commenced in 2019 and was to be completed in October 2021 but was extended until August 2022 due to covid-19.
Unfortunately, due to covid, the students were unable to travel to the other participant countries, Poland, Portugal and Czech Republic, as was originally planned. However, as an alternative there were online meetings with the students abroad.
As part of the project, the transition years used the opportunity to visit different sites in Achill- the Deserted Village, the Greenway and Kildownet cemetery, all of which have connections to emigration. In these places, they made recordings and listened to stories recounted by local man Thomas McLoughlin about emigration from Achill which they shared with the other participants of the project.
The culmination of the project is the production of a book, ’Searching for Home’. The students have worked on essays for this publication in collaboration with the other schools involved.
