The ASD Unit at Coláiste Pobail Acla
Mission Statement : The ASD Unit strives to provide a learning experience where all students attending, can reach their full potential in a happy, secure and caring environment.
We in the ASD Unit aim to offer a positive meaningful educational experience, which allows the student to develop to his / her full potential in an environment that offers clarity, predictability and calmness.
We provide an Autism specific learning environment, within a mainstream co-educational second level school. The setting includes optimum inclusion as part of the school community, with access to mainstream activities as appropriate.
In the ASD Unit, students are offered a wide variety of classes in a small and intimate setting. Here they are provided with social / personal skills that will prepare them for life after Secondary School. As well as personal tuition in a small class setting, they have the opportunity to attend mainstream classes with their peers. These classes include Music, Art, Woodwork and PE among others.
The ASD Unit has qualified and experienced staff catering for the needs of students with ASD. Each student has an individualised plan and a variety of best practice methods are employed to meet the varied needs of the students.
We encourage and facilitate close links with parents when working on individualised plans. We also liaise with external agencies in ensuring that all students reach their full potential.
The students attending the ASD Unit are encouraged to take part in school activities and trips. These may involve just the students attending the Unit or involve their peers from Mainstream. Examples are school tours, concerts, drama, bake sales, activities linked with Science week and more.
